Most bikers will agree that there's a great deal of satisfaction gained from having the sun on your face and the wind at your back during a bike ride. Why not combine that feeling with a tour of Roxbury, one of Boston's oldest neighborhoods and home to some of the region's most exciting stories? All rides include a mix of flat ground and hills, with a varying degree of difficulty. Riders are required to wear helmets and must bring their own bikes (this helps keep tour costs low).
This is where it all began! Starting in Eliot Square, we'll ride through nearly 200 years of historic architecture to the top of Highland Park. From there it's downhill into the 20th century past Malcolm X's home and into areas where local arts leader Elma Lewis left a strong impression. Once inside Franklin Park, tour old ruins, enjoy the lush forest, and ride over Frederick Law Olmsted's arched bridges. At the end of the ride, purchase a light meal at the Golf Clubhouse and relax on the terrace.
Difficulty: Moderate. Meets at Roxbury Heritage State Park, 183 Roxbury St
Weâll begin at Roxbury Crossing with the relatively well-known protests against the construction of I-95 along the Southwest Corridor. From there our attention will focus on mid-20th century revolutionary leaders Martin Luther King, Jr and Malcolm X. After passing the former locations of the Black Panthers and SNCC, weâll end with an overview of the 1967 and 1968 riots in Grove Hall and the police staging grounds in Franklin Park. Tie dyed t-shirt and and Afro pic are optional.
Difficulty: Easy. Meets at RoxburyÃÂ Crossing MBTA Station
Roxbury's Main Streets
Travel to the four corners of Roxbury: Egleston Square, Mission Hill, Dudley Square, and Grove Hall. Our tour will begin in front of Mission Church and travel down Tremont St and Malcolm X Blvd to Dudley Square. After a brief visit, weâll continue uphill to Grove Hall. From there weâll bike through Franklin Park and finish our ride in Egleston Square where we can direct riders back to the Southwest Corridor.
Difficulty: Easy. Meets at Mission Church, 1545 Tremont St.
The Endurance Ride
Looking for a little bit of a challenge? Donât think of this as a tour, itâs more of an adventure. On this ride weâll bike to the top Roxburyâs highest peaks, along some of its major roads, and past historic monuments. Stops will be limited to give us more riding time to cover as much of the neighborhood as possible. At the end of the ride, celebrate with a pub meal in Brigham Circle.
