ArtROX VLA legal clinic   Arts & Business Council of Boston, Discover Roxbury   Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts VLA ArtROX

Legal Clinics for Artists

Program Information
Discover Roxbury and Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts (VLA), a program of the Arts and Business Council of Greater Boston, are collaborating to provide increased legal services to Discover Roxbury and its constituents, with a focus on working artists.

The VLA has been providing free and reduced-cost legal assistance to the Massachusetts arts community for 25 years. Discover Roxbury is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the culture, history, and economy of the Roxbury community. VLA staff attorneys will be on-site for short consultations on a variety of legal issues.  These consultations will answer your legal questions and help you determine whether you will need more assistance. Artists of every medium and discipline, as well as arts administrators, are welcome to participate.
The 2014 legal clinics will be
  April 16, 5pm-8pm
  September 13, 10am-1pm
  December 10, 5pm-8pm

If you would like to participate in those clinics, please email Marisa Luse at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

To take part in the clinic, please email Marisa Luse at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to reserve an appointment slot. Scheduling is on a first come, first served basis. You will then need to fill out an online information sheet with your contact information and legal question before attending the clinic. Members of the greater Boston arts community are eligible to participate, including individual artists, arts administrators, and arts organizations.

The clinic will be held at the Dillaway-Thomas House in Roxbury Heritage State Park. The address is 183 Roxbury Street, Boston, MA 02119. Transportation directions can be found on Discover Roxbury's website.

How do I know if my question is a “legal” one?
When you schedule a clinic session, you will be asked to fill out a brief form and describe your questions.  If your question does not actually need a lawyer, we will let you know.  More likely, we can discuss the issue with you at the clinic to address your concerns and determine your needs.
Is this private?
Consultations will be entirely confidential between you and the VLA attorneys. Your information will not be shared with other attendees, outside parties, or Discover Roxbury personnel.
What if I need more help?
If your matter cannot be resolved at the time of your appointment, you can apply for legal assistance through the VLA. Please visit the VLA's website for more information on the VLA’s legal assistance process.
