2012 Winners

After weeks of votes leading up to Valentine's Day, the results are in for the most romantic places in Roxbury. As last year, we covered a wide range of venues and activities, from eating and shopping to the arts and transportation. Some of last year's winners were voted tops in their class again, with votes in one category being extremely tight. Did your favorite place make the cut? Or will you have some place new to visit this year?

Couples caught canoodling at this neighborhood hotspot can enjoy delicious soulful comfort food & signature drinks served against a backdrop of sizzling jazz. The cozy confines and warm colors encourage nibbling of food, and perhaps an ear or two.

Franklin Park


With or without a dog, take a stroll, or ride bikes, canoodle on benches or quietly listen to nature, these are just a few of the ways you and your special one can spend time together at Franklin Park. If park designer Frederick Law Olmstead were alive today, he might suggest snuggling up close on the Ellicott Arch, making a wish at Scarboro Pond, or counting the 99 steps thinking all the while, the ways you love your boo!

Link arms and walk down the corridors of the Museum of the National Center of Afro- American Artist allowing the visual stimulation to entice you both this Valentine’s Day. Let the art facts saturate your mind and then quiz each other on the work of world-renowned artists from ancient Nubia to present day.

An afternoon or evening in the Gardner, stepping into Boston's own magic garden, casts a spell. Just as Roxbury is at the heart of Boston, Dudley Square is the commercial heart of Roxbury. This historic area has been drawing people by the tens of thousands for generations and includes new businesses and ones which have been around for decades. Whether young or old, bring your sweetheart to shop, eat and reminisce about the history of "down Dudley."

Orange Line


Although the Orange Line will never be mistaken for a romantic trains of old Europe, it was voted the most romantic MBTA service in Roxbury. Long subway rides are perfect for cuddling with a loved one. Or, maybe you met your sweetie when he or she moved so you could sit down. Perhaps, best of all, if you haven't found romance at any of the other locations mentioned, the train will whisk you to new places and opportunities to meet and mingle with others.

With the city skyline as a backdrop, what couple gazing upon the site wouldn't make big plans? The architecture demands it, as does being in the literal heart of Boston! If you're looking for an inspiring backdrop to pop the question, visit the grounds of the Roxbury Heritage State Park, especially when the trees are in full bloom. Your feet will be planted atop Roxbury puddingstone, but you're sure to feel your hearts soar!
