Roxbury for Kids
Would you like to explore Roxbury, but you're not sure if there's stuff for your kids or teens to do? Don't worry, we've got you covered.
Start with one of our tours for an overview of the neighborhood. Our self-guided Roxbury Heritage Walk will keep teens challenged and provide them with a variety of sites to explore. Aspiring photographers, architects, and muralists will also find plenty of inspiration along the route. Younger children may prefer one of our themed trolley tours. Past events have included garden and art tours, and womens history tours.
Once you're more familiar with Roxbury, it's time to explore on your own. Stroll, jog or bike along the Southwest Corridor Park or within Frankin Park. Franklin Park has acres of rolling hills, urban forest, and a cave to explore. The Franklin Park Zoo will also give kids a chance to see and learn about a variety of tropical animals.
Young visual artists will enjoy the annual Roxbury Open Studios. Artists from around Roxbury participate in group shows, open their home studios, and sell original jewelry, photography, painting, sculpture, and other art forms. Museum-goers should visit the Museum of the National Center for Afro-American Artists (NCAAA). The museum is dedicated to the worldwide Black visual arts heritage and presents a wide range of historical and contemporary exhibitions, including Aspelta - A Nubian King's Burial Chamber. At the center of the burial chamber is a cast from Aspelta’s original sarcophagus containing a replica of his gilded coffin.
Kids interested in theater will enjoy free outdoor performances in Franklin Park or staged performances in the ballroom at the Roxbury Center for the Arts in Dudley Square. Performances in Franklin Park are seasonal and weather permitting; those at the Roxbury Center for the Arts are available year round.
Depending on when you visit, you may have the opportunity to celebrate in one of the neighborhood's historic re-enactments or annual festivals. The biggest celebrations are Patriots Day, Juneteenth, Roxbury Homecoming, the Puerto Rican Parade, the Dominican Festival, and the Caribbean Carnival.
Don't forget to enjoy the flavors of the neighborhood, too. Roxbury has restaurants and cafes catering to a variety of tastes and budgets that serve organic, Latin, Soul Food, Caribbean cuisine, and American fare. The main areas - Dudley Square, Egleston Square, Grove Hall and Brigham Circle - have the most to offer. But, try smaller restaurants on the side streets, too.
There's plenty to keep the kids busy as you explore the neighborhood. Have fun and enjoy!
