Get aboard Roxbury's Black History Trolley Tour, 2/11, w/Ekua Holmes & James Pierre w/3 centuries of history revealed https://t.co/MUCigDIQ - about a day ago
Boston's Black community has been on the move politically, socially, and artistically since 1638. Our semi-annual trolley tour travels through three centuries of Boston's historic Black neighborhoods. We follow the progression of the Black churches, reveal the struggles of the Civil Rights movement, and introduce participants to the movers, shakers, and strivers in Roxbury's Black History. Highlights include the former residences of Martin Luther King, Jr and Malcolm X, and a visit to the Museum of the National Center of Afro-American Artists.
The public tour runs semi-annually in February and July. This tour is also available for private group bookings (min 30 people required).
The names and stories of Roxbury's men - John Eliot, the Dudleys, Joseph Warren, Mel King, and John O'Bryant - are well-known around Boston. But how many stories do you know about Roxbury's prominent women? Dr. Z, Susan Dimock, Melnea Cass, Muriel Snowden, Elma Lewis, and others made important contributions to the neighborhood, Boston, and American society. Explore their histories and witness their legacies on the Roxbury Women's History tour.
The public tour runs semi-annually in March and November. Please visit our calendar for details.
The winter months offer time to gather in Roxbury's cozy communal spaces and discuss our traditions and important figures. November through March, we invite historians, professors, artists, and other prominent figures to speak about their research, work, or experiences in Roxbury as part of our History Speaker Series.
This winter, the series will focus on Lower Roxbury during its 1950s heyday as a jazz hub. Our team of researchers and collaborators will provide content for the jazz scene, introduce some of the prominent people, and discuss initial findings from an oral history project seeking to answer the question of whether the jazz scene influenced or was influenced by the early days of the Civil Rights Movement.
Go behind the scenes - literally - into Roxbury's verdant backyard gardens and green spaces. View a rich profusion of flowers, visit the Garden Girl's urban farm, stroll through an orchard, and delight in a gorgeous display of parks and historic sites along the way. These unique tours of Roxbury run rain or shine and are led by Tom Plant, Director of Special Projects in the Environmental Health Office of the Boston Public Health Commission. Our three garden tours are:
Highland Park Garden Walk (June)
Roxbury in Bloom trolley tour (June or July)
Highland Park Harvest Walk (September)
